A Simple Way to Power Up Your Lemon Water to Help You Beat Utter Exhaustion

Feeling tired? Stressed? Like you can never seem to reclaim even the tiniest bit of energy without the assistance of a giant cup — or multiple cups — of coffee? You might not be drinking enough water. Because if you’re postpartum and/or lactating, you need H2O in abundance.

From breastmilk production to digestion to blood circulation to respiration — water is essential to the functionality of every system in your body. With the addition of sleep deprivation and stress, that body of yours is plowing through its water stores at a rapid pace.

So, it should come as no surprise that dehydration exacerbates those feelings of depletion, exhaustion, and fight or flight. Yes, a lack of water can even put a strain on your nervous system and have your adrenals pumping that hormone adrenaline like nobody’s business, which leads to something called “adrenal fatigue.”

This is why we are so obsessed with ensuring you stay hydrated because it truly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support your body now and always. (So is breathing, for the record. You can read more about that here.)

Naturally, we want to help you get the biggest hydrating bang for your buck. So this recipe is easy and a great way to up your lemon water game. The key is adding two key minerals that will help combat deep fatigue.

Potassium is an electrolyte and in this recipe, we’re pulling from an unusual place: cream of tartar. I know, are we crazy? Fun fact: it’s an easily metabolized source of potassium and a little goes a long way, so you won’t even taste it.

Sodium helps control blood pressure and volume and is also essential to muscle function and nerve function. Your body wants this.

The magic of this lemon water upgrade is the balance of potassium and sodium which creates an easily metabolized electrolyte solution to support your adrenals.

The bonus?

Vitamin C, from lemon and orange, supports tissue repair and the absorption of collagen if you choose to add it. Collagen contains the essential amino acids that make up our tissues which is really helpful postpartum when we have a lot to heal physically.

Here’s the recipe.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups of filtered, still, or sparkling water
  • 1/8 tsp. cream of tartar. No cream of tartar on hand? No worries! Use high quality coconut water (approx 8oz) with high levels of potassium. Like 500mg+ and no added ingredients
  • 1/8 tsp. sea salt, not table salt. We are after the potent combo of potassium and sodium found in sea salt.
  • squeeze of lemon
  • squeeze of orange (or more lemon if you don’t have oranges)
  • Optional: add a scoop of collagen powder for added postpartum support for tissue repair, digestion, skin, hair, and nails! Why not?!
  • Need it sweeter? Add 1 tsp of honey

What to do:

Combine all ingredients into a glass, give it a stir, and enjoy!

Voila, you have given yourself and your body a massive dose of self-care. With this drink, you are helping every single system in your body function more optimally and support you as you heal and navigate your new normal.
